A Colourful Celebration Guatemalan Independence

The Bank of Guatemala has published the designs of its new commemorative 20 quetzales banknote and 1 quetzal coin marking the country’s bicentennial anniversary. This will be the first commemorative banknote in the Bank’s history.

The main motifs are the same as the circulating note, but the front is vertically orientated and incorporates SPARK® Live together with a Galaxy® Flip security thread. Both have a magenta-to-green colour change, and a dynamical circle visible when the note is tilted. 25 million of the notes have been produced.

The front of the coin, meanwhile, is the same as the circulation version, which features the national coat of arms. But on the reverse is a coloured image of the monument of Atanasio Tzul, who led the uprising against Spanish rule in 1920, along with the dates 1821-2021. 5,000 pieces have been minted.
