Cash & Payment News June

This month’s Cash & Payment News™ focuses on the environment, research on cash usage, payment challenges and token-based Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

The environment: On the environment, the Monetary Authority of Singapore has issued its first sustainability report, providing details of its plans for cash and we look at how better use of digitisation can help green the cash cycle. This ties in with details of a project to prepare a sustainable cash roadmap ahead of COP26 later this year.

Cash: The Dutch National Bank has issued a summary of its February 2021 cash usage survey and we review new research carried out by the University of Newcastle for NatWest Bank on how people decide to use cash, or not.

Payments: We review a series of reports in the last month about challenges associated with electronic payments.

CBDCs: We report on the launch of the new London Bank for International Settlements Innovation Hub and review the Swiss National Bank’s paper on how to issue a CBDC, a token-based CBDC being their preferred approach.

Add in the news on cash, payments and CBDCs, and another busy month.
