Celebrating 75 Years Through Coins
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has launched a special series of coins to mark the country’s 75th anniversary of independence, at a special ceremony organised by the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Currency Affairs.
The coins of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 rupee denominations all carry the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) logo (AKAM is the government initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the history and achievements of India’s people). They also include the special features of the 2019 circulating coin series for ease of identification by the visually-impaired.
While the new series is commemorative, it is intended that the coins will be used alongside their standard circulating counterparts and not be swept up by collectors.
