Currency Conference Heads to Mexico

Due to the pandemic, Currency Research combined the Banknote and Currency Conferences last year into one event, which took place in February in Washington DC. But now it is reverting to the traditional sequence of holding the events separately, starting with the Currency Conference, which takes place in Mexico City from 15-18 May.

There will be four seminars and workshops prior to the main programme on 15 May – a Global Payments Update, a State Printing Works Summit, a Design Thinking Interactive Workshop on Security Features, and a Circulating Coins Workshop. The latter is being run by the Currency News team.

Other activities on the Monday morning include an IACA member meeting and a tour of the Banco de México Museum.

The formal programme begins on the Monday afternoon with a keynote presentation from the Governor of the Banco de Mexico, Victoria Rodriguez.

Thereafter, over the course of the afternoon and the following two days, there are a series of plenary sessions, panel discussions and innovation sessions on topics including:

  • The Collective Pandemic Cash Experience of Australia, Canada, Mexico, the UK, and the US

  • Trends in Circulation & Central Bank Developments in Currency and Coin in Emerging Economies

  • The Changing Use of Cash: How the Industry is Adapting and Identifying New Opportunities

  • Current Threat Assessment: What are the Biggest Counterfeit Risks and Are We Staying Ahead of Them?

  • Public Education and Research: The Latest in Perception Studies and Use Cases

  • A More Sustainable Cash Cycle: From Production to Destruction, and All Steps In Between

  • Access to Cash: Innovation, Regulation & Legislative Developments

  • Cash and Contingency in Times of Crisis

  • CBDCs and Cash – Friends or Foes? Common Developments and Challenges.

On 18 May, two post-conference tours have been organised – one of the Banco de Mexico’s new production facility in Guadalajara, the other of the Mexican Mint in San Luis Potosí.

An active and full social programme accompanies the conference, with inclusive events each evening and, on 16 May, the conference dinner where the winners of the 2023 IACA Excellence in Currency Awards will be announced.
