Japan to Issue New Series in 2024

The Bank of Japan will start issuing its new series of banknotes in around the first half of July 2024. The actual date of issue will be announced when the necessary preparations have been completed.

The Bank of Japan notes currently in circulation will remain valid after the new series are issued.

The introduction of a new series was first announced in 2019, and also includes a new 500 yen coin, which has already been issued.

The designs of the notes were unveiled earlier this year (see CN April 2023). The first redesign since 2004, they will feature new portraits and high definition watermarks, a holographic stripe on the 10,000 and 5,000 yen and a patch on the 1,000 yen, as well as updated tactile marks and enlarged numerals for the visually-impaired. The serial numbers will change from 9 to 10 digits.
