Cash & Payment News
Cash & Payment News™ is our sister publication and, in its coverage and analysis of how cash is used and the wider payments eco-system, is a perfect complement to the issues covered by Currency News™.
Some of the topics in the June issue of CPN include:
Cash – we summarise a new paper from the Banca d’Italia about how to forecast cash demand. The Bank of England has just held a ‘Festival of Errors’ to learn from forecasting errors. This and the Cash Essentials response to the recent IMF forecasting paper means forecasting is well reported this month.
For countries faced with less cash, hard decisions have to be made about cash infrastructure. Paul Blond has summarised the recent Australian decision about whether to allow the merger of two major cash in transit companies, leaving the country with only one major provider.
Although it was 2019 when Kenya carried out its demonetisation exercise, something that can go very wrong, a report has been published explaining their approach and the success that resulted.
Payments – the Australian government has just published its Payments Strategy, showing how the payment mix is changing fast. In that context we have short pieces on Account-to-Account payments and a thought piece on whether payments in the Metaverse are an opportunity, given the scale and value they are already at and the activity in this area.
CBDCs – BIS has published a handbook on offline payments for CBDCs, meeting the needs of the 49% of central banks who say this is vital for a CBDC. We also cover the CBDC Federalist Society who have summarised what the major central banks are doing on CBDCs and where they are in their thinking on launching one. This balanced report shows that there are real doubts about the underlying user cases.
In CBDC News we cover Brugel’s report that says wholesale CBDCs must come first, Brazil’s pilot CBDC programme, the Hong Kong Monetary Authorities user cases and Thailand’s ‘pilot to learn’.
