HSP Asia Heads to Sri Lanka

The organisers of the High Security Printing™ (HSP) conferences, Reconnaissance International, have announced the programme for the upcoming HSP Asia event, which – after a four year absence due to COVID – finally takes place in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 4-6 December 2023.

The conference actually starts on 3 December with a seminar for central banks on The Future of Banknotes by De La Rue, followed by afternoon tea at the British High Commission.

The pre-conference workshops on 4 December include one on the mastering of machine authentication for high volumes of banknotes, run by Secura Monde, and one by counterfeit specialist Kerre Corbin entitled ‘Operation Timerbrier – A Counterfeiters Fall from Glory’, which will provide an in-depth analysis of the case against a father and son team who were sentenced in 2022 for manufacturing nearly £1 million worth of counterfeit banknotes.

Dr P Nandalal Weerasinghe, of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, will formally open the plenary session on 5 December, followed by papers from Currency News™ on cash usage and trends across Asia and the central bank on currency management, quality improvement and counterfeit deterrence.

The programme then splits into two tracks for currency and ID. The currency track includes sessions on Currency Developments, Design and Security, Production and Automation, and Sustainability and Recycling.

In the final session – on Technology and Innovation – the tracks merge to hear about mobile banknote authentication, smartphone readable optical security features, digital tools for education and financial inclusion, and a new register for optically variable security features.

The event, which is likely to attract around 300 participants, will be accompanied by an exhibition and will also host the prestigious Regional Banknote and Regional ID Document of the Year awards, which will be presented during the conference dinner.

In addition, there will be a post-conference tour for central banks and state printworks of the De La Rue Lanka printworks in Biyagama, which is a key Centre of Excellence for global banknote production.
