A Full Agenda for Banknote Conference 2024

The Banknote Conference, held every two years, is an independent, neutral forum for industry leaders to meet and discuss innovations, efficiencies, best practices, and new technologies and solutions that benefit their operations.

The next edition of the Banknote Conference will take place in Fort Worth, Texas from 13-16 May 2024 and is expected to have attendees from around 200 organizations, including 60+ central banks and 20+ printworks.

The program will begin with pre-seminar workshops focusing on banknote design and coin circulation, as well as a conference tour of the newly expanded BEP Western Currency Facility (WCF) to allow attendees understand how the BEP will deliver the next generation of currency.

The conference will consist of plenary sessions, presentations, and networking covering key topics such as cash and payment trends; the latest developments in security features, inks, and substrates; counterfeit trends; and sustainability efforts. It will then come to a close with a tour and reception at the Dallas Federal Reserve.

During the conference, leading experts from government and industry will be on stage to share their experiences and debate viewpoints. Themes that will be discussed will be:

  • Cash technology trends

  • Counterfeit trends and threats

  • New developments in security features

  • Substrates and inks: how the building blocks of notes are changing

  • Notes and the cash cycle: designing for automation

  • Collaborative product innovation

  • Physical production in a digital world

  • Sustainable cash production and destruction.

In addition to the general sessions, workshops and tours are also on the agenda.

One is entitled ‘Designers Convening @ The Banknote Conference’. It is the first time that Currency Research is adding a specialised program to the event for banknote designers and will be led by Karin Morck-Hamilton, Director of Global Design at Crane Currency, who will discuss the latest design processes, challenges, features, and techniques for designers.

Another – ‘Circulating Coins – Trends, Usage and Forecasting’ – will look at trends in cash and coin usage pre- and post- pandemic, along with denominational structures and the note/coin boundary, using brand new circulation data. It will also examine how to forecast and maintain coin supply in an age of acute uncertainty. The workshop will be run by Astrid Mitchell, Editor of Currency News™, and John Winchcombe, Editor of Cash & Payment News™, and will provide an invaluable precursor to the Coin Conference – co- managed by Currency Research – that takes place later in 2024.

There will also be a State Printer Summit, hosted by the BEP, comprising an open forum for peer-to-peer discussion and sharing of issues, challenges and technical developments between different state printworks. The workshop will aim to include as broad a representation of state printers from across the globe as possible.

Currency Research believes strongly in delivering the best and most balanced program for all delegates. To further this mission, the members of the Banknote Advisory Committee – comprising Currency Research’s leadership alongside industry leaders from both the government and private sectors – have been selected to provide insight, ideas and suggestions to ensure the conference focus and program remains interesting, engaging and relevant.
