Global Cash Day

Global Cash Day

‘Why don’t we celebrate cash more?’, we asked in the January edition of Currency News™. ‘And what better way to celebrate than an International Day of Cash (or World Cash Day)?’ Clearly other people thought so, too, because 12 March was the first ever Global Cash Day (12 March, or 12/3, was chosen as the date because it’s as easy as 1.2.3.).

Taking the lead on the initiative was the economist Prof Jay Zagorsky of Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, who is a supporter of cash and has recently published ‘The Power of Cash: Why Using Paper Money is Good for You and Society’.

He was supported by the Cash Alliance, a collective of cash-based organisations and associations including ATMIA, the International Currency Association, Security Ligue, ESTA, CashEssentials, Denaria, and Bargeld zählt.

Whether or not the initiative is taken to the next stage – ie. going for formal UN recognition – remains to be seen.
