The New BiG5ZiG Banknote Series
Following the introduction of the ZiG in April 2024 and public concerns on the quality of the then family of ZiG notes in circulation, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) undertook an evaluation to ensure that ZiG banknotes and coins remain relevant and supportive of economic activity.
In addition, country experiences have also shown that the quality and integrity of banknotes are also characterised by vibrant, modern and appealing ‘look and feel’. These characteristics play a crucial role in building trust, confidence and acceptability of the local currency and thereby enabling wider usage of domestic currency.
Rationale for upgrading the ZiG banknotes
Despite the increased use of digital payments, cash remains a critical part of the payment landscape, as it is familiar, inclusive and continues to be used across society in both formal and informal markets. The Reserve Bank, as part of its core function, endeavours to ensure that cash remains widely available and accepted as both a means of payment and a store of value.
