Security Papers – A Strategic Partner in Pakistan’s Currency

For any nation, the integrity of its currency and official documents rests heavily on the quality and counterfeit-resiliency of the security paper upon which they are printed. In Pakistan, the critical function of security paper production is entrusted to Security Papers Limited (SPL).

Established in 1965 with commercial operations beginning in 1969, SPL serves as the sole domestic producer of paper for Pakistan’s banknotes and other high-value documents. It operates as a strategic component of the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation. The company is also classified as a Category 1A (KPID) Key Point Installation by the Government of Pakistan, which underscores the extreme strategic sensitivity of its operations.

Over the decades, in response to growing national demand for secure documentation and evolving international standards for currency protection, SPL has substantially expanded its production capabilities, scaling capacity from 2,500 tonnes to 4,500 tonnes, per year.
