Currency Associations Join Forces

The International Currency Association (ICA) and the International Mint Industry Association (IMIA) have announced that they will merge to become a combined industry association. The two organisations will join forces under the ICA umbrella, aiming to unite the global currency industry more closely and strengthen the collective voice for cash, including both banknotes and coins.

The IMIA was founded in the summer of 2022, aiming to support the mint industry by proactively promoting the availability and acceptance of cash and its future role in resilient and cost-effective national payment infrastructures and stable financial systems.

It specifically focused on research and advocacy for coins as part of the cash, and hence payments, ecosystem. Publications included briefs on ‘The Case for Cash’, pro-active policies for cash payments in the context of crisis- resilience and cash legislation initiatives in the European Economic Area. The IMIA has also published detailed responses regarding clarification of the legal tender status of euro banknotes and coins 1.
