Naples Counterfeit Ring Smashed in Crypto-Telegram Sting
Italy’s Carabinieri have dismantled a major transnational criminal network that used Telegram and Bitcoin to distribute counterfeit euros across Europe. The crackdown, code-named ‘Operation Domino’, culminated in the Carabinieri Anti-Counterfeiting Command Cryptocurrency Section executing court orders against 12 suspects.
Coordinated by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, the operation targeted a highly organised syndicate accused of criminal conspiracy, aimed at the transnational purchase and distribution of large quantities of counterfeit banknotes distributed on channels of the social network Telegram’ in exchange for cryptocurrency payments and self-laundering of illegal proceeds.
According to investigators, the group operated out of the historic Spanish Quarters in Naples. Despite its local roots, the network achieved a massive international reach by exploiting digital tools and encrypted channels.
The syndicate utilised a dedicated Telegram channel named ‘ELREAL SHOP’ as an online showcase to advertise high-quality fake banknotes. International buyers purchased the counterfeit banknotes, in denominations of €20, €50, and €100, exclusively using Bitcoin, allowing the ring to anonymise its financial trails.
