Banknotes have become highly sophisticated, with a massive range of machine readable features to fight the counterfeit threat. At the same time, says Louisenthal, it has also been creating innovative Level 1 features, to stop the counterfeit threat at the first pass, which are memorable, simple to use, visible even under poor lighting conditions and which, at the same time, also send a positive theme into the local community.

This theme, or philosophy, is perfectly represented in Azerbaijan’s new 50 manat note which, as covered in last month’s Currency News, is one of three new notes to be issued as part of a redesign of the whole series. With its evocative motifs and state-of-the-art features that tell the story of ‘Education and the Future’, it is intended to reflect Azerbaijan’s forward-thinking culture.

In particular, the note features a RollingStar® LEAD ‘Mix’ foil stripe to the right of the front. This foil incorporates micromirror features, state-of-theart holograms, colour shift thin film technology, 3D flip and dynamic effects. By using outstanding, and effective cross- referencing symbols, a new stage of storytelling can be achieved, says Louisenthal.

But perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the animated image of a person walking, the detailed movements of which can be seen at the bottom of the foil stripe when the note is tilted. At the same time, the colour also changes from gold-to-green. This eye-catching motif is called AnimateEffect, ad brings every movement of people, animals or other moving objects to life.
