Indonesia Issues New Series for 2022

Bank Indonesia has issued a new series of banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 rupiahs (Rps) to coincide with the country’s 77th anniversary of independence.

The 2022 series retains the same portraits of national heroes on the front side, and cultural themes of Indonesia (traditional dances, natural landscapes and flora) on the reverse as the notes of the previous series, issued in 2016. However, they include more advanced security features, a sharper colour palette and post-print varnishing for durability.

A variety of paper suppliers were chosen for the substates – including Crane Currency, Goznak, Landqart, Louisenthal, Portals and PURA, with the contracts for each denomination split between a primary and secondary supplier (and in the case of the Rp 50,000 and 100,000 notes, between three suppliers). The notes were all designed and printed by the state printer Perum Peruri.

The two highest denominations feature SICPA’s SPARK® Live and Crane’s ‘RAPID® HD Detect’ micro-optic security thread. The threads for the other denominations, including colour shift, have been supplied by Hueck Folien and PURA.

According to Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, ‘this launch of rupiah currency is a concrete manifestation of our collective commitment to provide quality and reliable rupiah currency as a symbol of state sovereignty and for unifying the nation.’

The new notes will co-circulate with those of the 2016 series, which will remain legal tender until withdrawn from circulation by the Bank.
