CCL Secure Reduces CO2 Emissions by 26% in UK

CCL Secure has achieved a 26% reduction in carbon emissions per tonne of product at its Wigton site in England since 2018. With the support of sustainability consultants Verco, CCL Secure has reduced manufacturing emissions across all three scopes of greenhouse gases, without the inclusion of carbon offsets and market based instruments.

‘At CCL Secure, we recognise we must play our part in increasing the sustainability of our operations, alongside our products. This is why our environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment is at the heart of everything we do. We believe this is how businesses will survive and thrive going forward,’ said Gary Frizell, Engineering and Sustainability Manager at CCL Secure.

After developing a baseline of the organisation’s on-site energy consumption and emissions, CCL Secure’s engineering team implemented an aM&T (automatic monitoring and targeting) system to maximise efficiency through the reduction of baseload energy. Steam, gas and electricity usage have been reduced through smart scheduling. Optimising the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), as well as lighting on-site, has also been key to reducing emissions.

Additional environmental achievements made to date include:

  • Investing in the in-house manufacture of previously sourced raw materials

  • The reduction of incoming goods transport emissions by 90% (with no incoming air transport in 2021)

  • Zero waste to landfill on track to be achieved by the end of 2022.

According to CCL Secure, it continues to work with Verco in finding opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain.

‘For manufacturing organisations, it’s fundamental to collaborate with suppliers, employees and internal stakeholders to improve operational outputs,’ Gary Frizell explained.

‘Analysis of an organisation’s baseline carbon emissions and energy consumption is the first step on the road to increased efficiency and sustainability. Becoming environmentally sustainable is a journey; while there might be many roadblocks, giving up is not an option.’
