£1 Billion at Stake: The Battle for UK Security Printing Contracts

The UK is navigating a pivotal moment in its national infrastructure, embarking on major security printing tenders totalling over £1 billion covering banknotes, passports, and excise-control stamps, On the banknote front, the Bank of England has launched a £750 million tender covering the future supply of banknotes produced at its printworks in Debden, currently managed by De La Rue.

The new agreement is slated to run from March 2028 to February 2038, with possible extensions into 2041. While the nominal value is set at £750 million, the Bank has noted that the final cost will fluctuate based on public demand for cash and future design requirements. Because of the sensitivity of currency production, potential bidders must pass rigorous confidentiality hurdles before viewing the technical specifications.

For De La Rue, retaining this contract is existential. Having operated the site since 2015, the company views the Debden arrangement as the crown jewel of its portfolio.
